I recently had the opportunity to interview Paula Jurko owner of Footprints to Wellness, a BodyTalk System, Reiki, and Reflexology center in downtown Powell, Here are the answers she gave to my questions.

What is your background and what lead you to this business?

When I was a child my mother took me to a holistic chiropractor who prescribed homeopathic remedies and utilized muscle testing. I have been fascinated by complimentary alternative therapies ever since then. I have a degree in Exercise Science from The Ohio State University and ran my own personal training business for some time. I have tried many different modalities in the last 15 years. I came across The BodyTalk System in 2003 and was immediately drawn to the system. I was amazed at the protocol and the results that I saw with my own sessions. In October 2007 Columbus had our very own Certified Instructor, Mary Shields, Ph.D. I could not pass up the opportunity to finally learn the system myself. I was a certified practitioner by April 2008 and opened my practice in June 2009.

How does holistic health apply to your business and your lifestyle?

I believe that health is a holistic process of balancing mind, body, and spirit. In my practice the whole person is addressed. Individuals come to my office for a wide variety of concerns but the commonality is that the sessions address their physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health. I am interested in what is lying underneath the symptom or concern. I am a true advocate for my clients. If I do not have the resources to help them through their journey then I connect them to other holistic professionals that may specialize in a certain aspect of their care.
For me personally holistic heath is about finding balance in my life. I am always a work in progress and certainly have not mastered my own self-care. That is why I seek out services that will support me. I really have what I like to call my dream team of other professionals that I use for support. I seek nutritional counseling, traditional therapy, reflexology, colon hydrotherapy, hypnotherapy, etc. Whatever I may need at the time.

What makes your business unique and sets you apart from your competition?

What makes The BodyTalk System unique is the ability to identify and address the stored emotions, memories, and belief systems that underlie much of our state or dis-ease. The system is one of the most comprehensive modalities I have come across. It works with the client’s innate wisdom to heal the body the same way we heal a cut or a cold. Therefore, they are responsible for their own healing. The client is actively involved with the sessions and they leave with an increased level of personal awareness.

Does Body Talk work for everyone?

Absolutely! Everyone can benefit from increased awareness. I liken a session to having a conscious dialogue with the subconscious mind. Our brain and body is like the black box on an airplane; every memory, thought, and emotion is stored within the body and cells. You would be surprised how much we are holding onto without even being aware of how we are limiting our potential for whole health.

Has the recession impacted your business, and if so, how have you adapted?

I do think that individuals are more conscientious of their spending in this economy. I have implemented packaged pricing to help my clients.

Is there anything you wish people knew about Body Talk that they probably don’t know?

Simply how effective the modality is! I am constantly impressed with how much it helps my clients move forward and really let go of the things that are no longer serving them. It really is hard not be amazed with what unfolds in the sessions.

What do you like about best about what you do?

How fully present I am in the sessions. To be an effective practitioner one has to be present. I can not be in my past or future; my mind can not wander. There is no room for my ego in the sessions. I am simply holding the space for the clients healing to take place.

What is one of your favorite stories about a client benefiting from your service?

Wow there is so many! One short term client was a mother who brought her 2 year old boy to see me because the doctors wanted to place tubes in his ears. Within 4-5 sessions his ears were fine and surgery was no longer needed. Another client was a man that came to me for a specific health concern. He had experienced a tremendous amount of life stressors within the last five years. The sessions moved him through the health concern within 6 sessions but he was so amazed with the system and how much he was able to heal that he continues to come for regular sessions. He has been able to really move through so many life events and beliefs that have been with him since childhood. His goal is to reach 50 this year a much happier healthier man.

Are there additional resources you would recommend to someone who is interested in learning more about you and Body Talk?

Yes, my site is www.footprintstowellness.com. You can learn more about me and my services as well as resource links. Also, www.bodytalksystem.com offers articles, videos, and other information from the International BodyTalk Association. There you can find seminars as well if anyone is interested in learning the system.

<ins>Dr Peter Atherton’s Top 10 reasons to drink Aloe Vera Gel</ins><ins></ins>

<ins>“Imagine slicing open an Aloe leaf and consuming the Gel directly from the plant. Forever’s signature product, Aloe Vera Gel, is as close to the real thing as you can get. The first of its kind to receive certification by the International Aloe Science Council, this rich blend of pulp and liquid gives us a product as near to nature as possible. The proof is in the Aloe: after reading my top 10 reasons why I think you should drink Aloe Vera Gel,you will definitely see why Aloe Vera has earned the nickname ‘the medicine plant’.</ins>

<ins>10. Effect on the gut</ins><ins>
Drink Aloe Vera for a wonderfully beneficial action on bowel function which results in a smooth and efficient transit of contents, often eradicating inconvenient, colicky pain.</ins>

<ins>9. Assists in healthy digestion</ins><ins>
A healthy digestive tract ensures that nutrients from the food we eat are absorbed into the bloodstream. There is clear, clinical evidence that by drinking Aloe Vera Gel the bowel is able to absorb these nutrients more efficiently, especially protein. I also suspect that many other substances are much better absorbed under its influence.</ins>

<ins>8. Effect on gut flora</ins><ins>
Aloe Vera is a natural balancer in many areas and nowhere more so than inside the gut where it tends to regulate the proportion of bacteria and yeasts that inhabit it. At various times in life people can develop an imbalance through a variety of causes which can lead to problems and, as with probiotics, Aloe may often help to normalise the situation.</ins>

<ins>7. Effect on the skin</ins><ins>
When they are first produced deep in the epidermis skin cells are rather large and very much alive, but by the time they reach the surface after 21–28 days (in normal skin) they are a shadow of their former selves and are transformed into just thin flakes of keratin which eventually fall off. Aloe Vera Gel provides the essential nutrition to feed the basal cells and therefore the skin remains healthy and is able to perform its vital functions more efficiently – as well as looking much better!</ins>

<ins>6. Increases the activity of fibroblasts</ins><ins>
Fibroblasts are specialised cells found in the skin and their job is to produce fibre such as collagen and elastin. These fibres give the skin its structure and, of course, make it look plump and elastic.</ins>

<ins>This is fine from a cosmetic point of view but they are also extremely important in wound healing, as these fibres create a mesh or network over which the new skin cells advance to close the wound. The effect when we drink Aloe Vera is to stimulate them to reproduce faster and therefore, being more of them, they make more fibre. The time taken for wounds to heal under the influence of Aloe Vera can be reduced by up to a third.</ins>

<ins>5. Antiviral activity</ins><ins>
Within the mucilage layer of the leaf which surrounds the inner gel there is a long chain sugar or polysaccharide. This has the capability of being able to help defend us against attacks by various viruses from the simple ones causing every day illnesses to the more complex ones. This sugar has actually been extracted from Aloe Vera in the USA and made into a drug but it is actually not necessary to extract the magic bullet. Drinking the Gel is just as effective.</ins>

<ins>4. Anti-inflammatory and pain killing effect</ins><ins>
Among the substances that have been identified in Aloe Vera are several that are anti-inflammatory and pain killing which are very helpful for people experiencing these symptoms.</ins>

<ins>3. A useful source of minerals (when we drink Aloe Vera)</ins><ins>
Some of the minerals found in Aloe Vera include calcium, sodium, potassium, iron, chromium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc. This is because the plant tends to grow in areas where soils are rich in these minerals and its roots are able to absorb them and deliver them to us in a very available form.</ins>

<ins>2. A useful source of vitamins</ins><ins>
Aloe Vera Gel contains a large range of vitamins – even trace elements of vitamin B12 which is rarely found in plants. Apart from vitamin A, it contains B-group vitamins, vitamin C,vitamin E and folic acid. Many of these vitamins cannot be stored by the body so we need to constantly top them up from the food that we eat. What better way than by drinking a daily amount of Aloe Vera Gel while at the same time building up the body’s defence system against oxidative stress naturally?</ins>

<ins>And my number one reason to drink Aloe Vera Gel is…
1. A general tonic for good health</ins><ins></ins>

<ins>By drinking the Gel with all its important ingredients (often now deficient in our food) including 19 of the 20 amino acids needed by the human body, and seven of the eight essential ones that just cannot be made, the body is able to get enough to allow complex enzyme systems to work really well. This means the body can function at 100%. The net result to the individual is a wonderful feeling of wellbeing which tends to go with an improved ability to withstand and even fight illness.</ins>

<ins></ins>

1.	Drink water. Most people are chronically dehydrated. We often mistake thirst for hunger. If you feel hungry between meals, drink a glass of water before giving into cravings. Limit liquid calories from soda and juice.

2.	Feed your soul with primary food. Friends and family, physical activity, spirituality and a satisfying career feed us. Lack of primary food creates over-reliance on secondary, edible food.

3.	Eat a plant-based diet. Plant foods are typically lower in fat and calories and higher in filling fiber than meat, dairy and processed foods, while providing loads of essential nutrients.

4.	Chew your food well. Digestion begins in the mouth. By thoroughly chewing your food, your body will better assimilate nutrients; you will also slow down your eating. It takes about 20 minutes for your brain to register that it is full. By slowing your eating, you’ll feel full and satisfied on less food.

5.	Eat real food. Avoid products with high-fructose corn syrup or a long list of unpronounceable ingredients. They tend to be highly processed, lacking the nutrients your body needs, and are often loaded with empty calories.

6.	Eat breakfast. Skipping meals causes your blood sugar levels to peak and dip, affecting your energy and moods. It can also cause overeating later on because you’re so hungry.

7.	Eat mindfully. Turn off the TV. Get away from the computer. Sit down and savor the food you are eating with no distractions.

8.	Get moving. Do any type of physical activity every day. Find movement or exercise you enjoy.

9.	Sleep, rest and relax. When you are sleep-deprived or stressed, your body will crave energy, causing cravings for sugary snacks and caffeine as an energy boost.

10.	Schedule fun time. Boredom and stress can lead to overeating. Make sure to take time to laugh, play and participate in activities that bring you joy.

 1. Set up some form of accountability. Land says the best thing you can do with any fitness program is get accountability, whether it’s purchasing a gym membership, finding a workout partner or signing up to be part of a fitness-based club. “Put something on the line, because you’re going to be way more likely to make it part of a routine if you have some sort of external motivation,” he said.
2. Set goals and start small. Land said you can’t expect to jump out of the gate and run a marathon. Instead, set attainable goals like working out for 20 minutes a day, five days a week. When you reach those goals, set the next one a little higher.
3. Schedule something competitive. Even cardio freaks have to set far-away goals to keep them accountable, so Land suggests finding local 5K or fun runs, bicycle races or even half marathons. “I have to have something to train for,” Land said. “I schedule something six months in advance.”
4. Pick cardio that you like. If you aren’t a treadmill runner and you force yourself to climb onto the treadmill day after day, your drive is going to fade — fast — so it’s important to choose the kinds of cardio that you really enjoy.
5. Don’t compare yourself with other people. Land warns against checking out the treadmill next to you with the guy running at a 6-minute-mile pace. “Your body isn’t their body, and you’ve not been doing what they’ve been doing,” he said. “And vice versa.”

Chewing

When it comes to increased health, it’s not just what we eat but how we eat. Digestion actually begins in the mouth, where contact with our teeth and digestive enzymes in our saliva break down food. But these days most of us rush through the whole eating experience, barely acknowledging what we’re putting in our mouths. We eat while distracted—working, reading, talking and watching television—and swallow our food practically whole. On average we chew each bite only eight times. It’s no wonder that many people have digestive problems.

There are many great reasons to slow down and chew your food
.
Saliva breaks down food into simple sugars, creating a sweet taste. The more we chew, the sweeter our food becomes, so we don’t crave those after-meal sweets.
Chewing reduces digestive distress and improves assimilation, allowing our bodies to absorb maximum nutrition from each bite of food.
More chewing produces more endorphins, the brain chemicals responsible for creating good feelings.
It’s also helpful for weight loss, because when we are chewing well, we are more apt to notice when we are full.
In fact, chewing can promote increased circulation, enhanced immunity, increased energy and endurance, as well as improve skin health and stabilize weight.
Taking time with a meal, beginning with chewing, allows for enjoyment of the whole experience of eating: the smells, flavors and textures. It helps us to give thanks, to show appreciation for the abundance in our lives and to develop patience and self-control.

The power of chewing is so great that there are stories of concentration camp survivors who, when others could not, made it through with very little food by chewing their meager rations up to 300 times per bite of food. For most of us 300 chews is a daunting and unrealistic goal. However, you can experience the benefits of chewing by increasing to 30 chews per bite. Try it and see how you feel.

Try eating without the TV, computer, Blackberry, newspaper or noisy company. Instead just pay attention to the food and to how you are breathing and chewing.

This kind of quiet can be disconcerting at first, since we are used to a steady stream of advertising, news, media, email and demands from others. But as you create a new habit, you will begin to appreciate eating without rushing. You have to eat every day—why not learn to savor and enjoy it?

Food Focus: Quinoa

Quinoa (pronounced keen-wah), is a nutritional powerhouse with ancient origins. It was originally cultivated by the Incas more than 5,000 years ago; they referred to it as the “mother of all grains.” It contains all nine essential amino acids, making it a great source of protein for vegetarians. Quinoa is also high in magnesium, fiber, calcium, phosphorus, iron, copper, manganese, riboflavin and zinc.

While quinoa is widely considered a grain, it’s actually the seed of a plant called Chenopodium or Goosefoot, related to chard and spinach. Quinoa is a gluten-free grain and has a similar effect as other whole grains in helping to stabilize blood sugar.

It has a waxy protective coating called saponin which can leave a bitter taste. For best results, rinse quinoa before you cook it or even soak it for a few hours or overnight. When cooked, it has a fluffy, slightly crunchy texture. Try it in soups, salads, as a breakfast porridge or as its own side dish.

For quinoa, and whole grains in general, the majority of digestion occurs in the mouth through chewing and exposure to saliva. For optimal nutrition and assimilation, it is vital to chew your grains well and with awareness. A great meditation is to find a calm place, without distractions, to sit down for your meal. Make it a habit to chew each bite 20 times or more. See how this simple practice can help your digestion and overall focus for the rest of your day.

Recipe of the Month:
Quinoa Pilaf
Prep Time: 3 minutes
Cooking Time: 30-40 minutes

Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients:

1/2 cup dried cranberries

1/2 cup walnut pieces

1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

pinch of salt

Directions:

1. Rinse quinoa in fine mesh strainer until water runs clear.

2. Boil the water and add quinoa and salt, cover and reduce heat.

3. After 15 minutes add cranberries and walnuts to top; do not stir.

4. Cook 5 minutes more, until all the liquid is absorbed.

Exercise may be the closest thing to the fountain of youth. Not only does regular activity strengthen your muscles and improve heart and lung function, but it can also reduce your risk of major diseases, stimulate the growth of new brain cells, and even add years to your life. Studies show just 30 minutes of physical activity on most days is all that’s required to reap big benefits.
The range of health bonuses now attributed to exercise has surprised even doctors. Research suggests that workouts may do the following:
1.
Keep you young. Workouts such as brisk walking or cycling boost the amount of oxygen consumed during exercise. Improving your aerobic capacity by just 15 to 25 percent significantly adds longevity to your life. Aerobic exercise may also stimulate the growth of new brain cells in older adults.
2.
Reduce infections. Moderate workouts temporarily rev-up the immune system by increasing the aggressiveness or capacity of immune cells. That may explain why people who exercise catch fewer colds.
3.
Prevent heart attacks. Not only does exercise raise “good” HDL cholesterol and lower blood pressure, but new research shows it reduces arterial inflammation, another risk factor for heart attacks and strokes.
4.
Ease asthma. New evidence shows that upper-body and breathing exercises can reduce the need to use an inhaler in mild cases of asthma.
5.
Control blood sugar. Exercise helps maintain a healthy blood-sugar level by increasing the cells’ sensitivity to insulin and by controlling weight. Regular brisk walking can significantly cut the risk of developing type 2 Diabetes.
6.
Protect against cancer. Exercise may reduce the risk of colon-cancer by speeding waste through the gut and lowering the insulin level. It may also protect against breast and prostate cancer by regulating hormone levels.
7.
Combat stress. Regular aerobic exercise lowers levels of stress hormones. For many people, exercise helps relieve depression as effectively as antidepressant medication.
8.
Relieve hot flashes. Increasing fitness by walking or practicing yoga enhances mood and may reduce some menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes and night sweats.
9.
Protect men’s health. Pelvic exercises may help prevent erectile dysfunction and possibly benign prostate enlargement, a common cause of urinary problems.
10.
Prolong life. Studies lasting many years have consistently shown that being active cuts the risk of premature death by about 50 percent for men and women.

Moderation in anything is ok but it is very difficult in our society to have sugar in moderation because it is in most packaged and processed products. The average person now eats around 48 teaspoons or 1/2 cup of sugar per day.

Sugar comes by many names
Agave
barley malt
brown sugar
beet sugar
cane sugar
date sugar
evaporated sugar cane
fructose
fruit juice concentrate
glactose
glucose
high fructose corn syrup
lactose
maltose
molasses
rice syrup
raw sugar

“The body’s threshold for added sugar is about 2 teaspoons of added sugar at one time, two to three times a day” Suicide by sugar

Going cold turkey for many is too challenging especially if you are addicted to sugar. Try simply making a conscious choice to reduce your sugar intake weekly.

How to tell if you have a sugar addiction?
What do you eat on a daily basis?
Soda, how many per day?
sugar or sweetener in your coffee?
do you use honey, agave, molasses?
Do you need something sweet after every meal?
Are most of your snacks sugar laden?
If you consume sugar everyday from one or more of these sources you may be consuming too much sugar.

Become aware of how you are treating your body. There is a consequence to everything we eat, think, drink, say and do. With food, it takes some time before the consequences of abuse show up. Be mindful of what you are putting in your mouth, how much and how often. Nothing is more important than your health.

We live in a fast paced world. People are on the go, multi-tasking, planning and thinking ahead. In a busy world, people also eat on the go; in the car, at their desks, standing up, walking down the street, barely taking the time to enjoy their meal. When we eat quickly, we tend to eat more, therefore consuming more calories.
Digestion begins in the mouth. Slowing down to completely chew your food, allows the release of digestive enzymes that break down food and greater assimilation of nutrients. Whole foods, especially whole grains, must be mixed with saliva and chewed until they become liquid to release their full nutritional value. Because digestion becomes so efficient when you chew your food thoroughly, your body will begin to feel wonderfully light. To get into the habit of chewing correctly, try counting the chews in each bite, aiming for 30 to 50 times. It helps if you put your fork down between bites.
The New York Times reported on a few scientific studies to support the claim that eating slowly is a method for consuming fewer calories. Who could imagine that losing weight is as simple as taking a few more minutes to slow down and eat what is already on your plate?
